Capital Acquisitions Tax: Threshold Increased

Budget 2016 offers some relief in respect of gifts/inheritances to children from their parents.

The “Group A” (parents to children) tax free threshold has increased from €225,000 to €280,000.

This is a welcome development considering recent increases in property prices, and goes some way to mitigating the significant reductions in the threshold which in 2009 was in excess of €540,000.

The applicable rate of CAT remains at 33%.
